After nearly two years of transformation, The WaterShed Education Center has officially reopened. With more than 25 brand-new interactive exhibits, immersive art, and high-tech learning spaces, The WaterShed Climate + Water Education Center offers visitors of all ages a powerful, hands-on introduction to climate science, action, and water stewardship. Designed with input from local students, tribes, educators, and scientists, the exhibits are deeply rooted in the Boise River’s story — and in the choices we can all make to protect it.

One of the highlights is Sustainable Boise, an arcade-style video game on three massive screens where players explore how everyday decisions about energy, transportation, and water use can build a cleaner, more resilient future. Another crowd favorite is the Snow Theater, a room where students “dance” to make digital snow fall — all while learning how our mountain snowpack feeds the Boise River. Younger learners from local elementary schools were the first to test out the new exhibits this March. From shaping landscapes in an augmented reality sandbox to reflecting on personal water memories, the center invites visitors to explore science in deeply personal and engaging ways.

Before leaving, guests can even make a pledge to help the planet, choosing from categories like water conservation, energy savings, and sustainable transportation. They can then see their commitment projected on the wall and joined by others.

The WaterShed is open Monday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 11818 W. Joplin Road in Boise. Admission is free. For quieter visits, try coming after 1 p.m. on weekdays, when school groups have wrapped up. Learn more at boisewatershed.org.
