Selected tissues (muscle, liver and
thyroid) are collected from game animals accidentally killed on
INL roads. Thyroid samples from the sampled animals are analyzed by gamma spectrometry specifically
for Iodine-131. Muscle and liver samples are processed
and submitted for gamma spectrometry
analysis.
Waterfowl
Waterfowl samples are collected
from waste disposal ponds at four facilities on the INL to
evaluate the potential for exposure to members of the public who
might consume these game animals. Control samples are also
taken in areas distant from the INL. Waterfowl samples are analyzed
by gamma spectrometry. Selected samples are also analyzed
for Strontium-90 and transuranic radionuclides.
Marmots
(as needed)
Yellow-bellied
marmots, or rockchucks (Marmota flaviventris) are sampled
from the RWMC area.
This large member of the squirrel family is hunted and
consumed by Native American people in the area. Marmots
samples are analyzed for gamma emitting radionuclides.
Selected samles are also analyzed for strontium-90,
plutonium-238, plutonium-239/240, and americium-241.
Mourning Doves
(as needed)
Mourning
doves (Zenaida macroura) are a game bird commonly hunted across
the United States. Dove are sampled from radioactive and
contaminated waste ponds on the INL to evaluate the potential
for exposure to members of the public who might consume these
birds. All samples are analyzed for gamma emitting
radionuclides with a subset analyzed for strontium-90,
plutonium-238, plutonium-239/240, and americium-241.
